Somewhat unusually (for Binge anyway) my week started off with a double session a 6:30am 1600 and then a Monday evening Masters session. What on earth is going on here?
I even made it to the public Masters session at Stanley on Tuesday evening. I haven’t been there for a while and there was an influx of new swimmers (actually they may have been turning up twice a week for the last 8 months but they were new to me)
I say they were new because there was a marked reluctance to “get on with it”, although their technical ability suggested they had been club swimmers it must’ve been a while since they had swum a session in a lane. They were game though and it made quite a change for me to be leading a lane rather than hanging off the back.
Saturday was an interesting session, Made it down to Durham for the two hour Triathlon session, well it’s actually 2 x 1 hour sessions back to back. As I hovered around the end of the pool wondering which lane to join I was approached by a couple of the guys and invited to join in their “endurance” set.
They were going to swim 3k in the hour, so 100’s on 2 minute pace. I thought that would be fine and we set off on a series of 600’s as you can see below. To break this up we each led for 200 metres as we rotated through the set. I was doing the 4 x 50’s and was reasonably pleased with the set. Nothing to write home about really but a fairly measured 3k and I think my feel for the water might gradually be returning.
It was all going so well until I looked at EMSC 4.0’s schedule, he benignly suggested I should miss out the 900 metre warm up (as I was probably warmed up enough!) and move to the main set, my heart sank when I saw the phrase in block capitals “THIS IS A VERY HARD SET”.
And oh my goodness yes it was, not so much the 50’s although the progressive bit was a tad taxing but the 100’s and the last set when I rather rashly chose to swim them breaststroke….what a stupid decision.
